Vista: Calm

Personal Finance

A personal finance app that makes

money feel calm, not like a spreadsheet.

01 — Problem space

The Problem

Money apps are built to show everything. People mostly need

to know one thing, and to stay in charge of what happens

next.

01

ANXIETY

Data Burial

Banking apps bury the single number people need

under endless screens of raw data, creating

unnecessary anxiety.

02

AGENCY

Loss of Control

Automated splits and features often leave users

feeling like they’ve lost agency over their own money.

02 — Process

Research &

Co-

Design

Co-design sessions and thematic coding used to align app

design with how users actually think about cash flow.

Method

Designing with users,

not for them.

Participants sketched their own money screens, then we

coded the language they used into recurring themes.

Co-design

Sessions where people arranged cash-flow concepts

in the order they naturally think about them.

Synthesis

Thematic coding of sketches and transcripts to find

shared mental models.

Alignment

Structure and copy rebuilt around those themes

before any high-fidelity UI.

Key insight

Grouping by intent — spending

commitments vs. net worth —

matches mental models.

03 — Screens walkthrough

✦ concept

Vista leads with what you can safely

spend today, not an intimidating net

worth. Money feels lighter when the first

number is one you can act on.

Because we design for young adults, we

explain money in plain words and keep

every automated action visible and

reversible.

✦ insight

The rest of the app follows the same rule: one clear

number first, with the detail one tap away. Colour does the

quiet work, so nothing shouts.
