Puro
Overview
Puro is a pour-over coffee companion app that helps beginner baristas learn, practice, and refine their manual brewing techniques while tracking flavor profiles and coffee beans. This project mattered because pour-over coffee has a steep learning curve—beginners often struggle to manage precise ratios, multi-step timing, and variables like grind size while trying to log their results. This case study shows how I connected real-time guided brewing with an intuitive journaling tool to make specialty coffee accessible and repeatable.
Problem
Many beginner baristas struggle to master pour-over brewing because methods like the V60 involve long, multi-step recipes with complex timing, specific water ratios, and stirring techniques. Attempting to follow a recipe while manually timing a brew and remembering variable adjustments (like grind size) creates high cognitive load. Furthermore, traditional coffee journaling is tedious, making it difficult for beginners to correlate changes in their technique with the final sensory outcome (sweetness, acidity, body, and aftertaste).
Solution
I designed a dual-mode mobile application featuring a real-time Guided Brew Assistant and an effortless Sensory Journal. The experience breaks down multi-step recipes into clear visual and audio cues, guiding users on when to pour, stir, and adjust parameters like grind size. Post-brew, a streamlined rating system allows users to quickly map flavor characteristics and log roastery details. I also integrated a recipe-sharing framework, allowing beginners to learn from established recipes and share their own successful brews with the community.
Goals
The project started with two needs that had to work together: lower the barrier to entry for complex manual coffee brewing, and build a seamless habit around logging and refining recipes.
Reduce Cognitive Load: Focus on creating a distraction-free active brew interface so baristas can follow multi-step recipes without losing track of timing or water weight.
Simplify Sensory Journaling: Make logging taste variables (sweetness, acidity, body, aftertaste) quick and visual, helping users instantly see how recipe tweaks affect flavor.
Enable Knowledge Sharing: Create an easy way for users to save roastery details, document custom recipes, and share their brew parameters with other coffee enthusiasts.
